Biography of VIGNA PETRUSSA

Vigna Petrussa winery was founded and operates in Albana di Prepotto, a land known as the only true home of Schioppettino, a noble wine rediscovered thanks to the efforts of Hilde and our winery, but also of other important grape varieties such as Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, Friulano, Sauvignon and Picolit. The hills surrounding the Judrio valley create a natural amphitheatre for the reception of sunlight and at the same time protect the vines from the cold north winds. Under the action of sun, wind and rain, the Eocene marl (Ponka), of which the hills of Prepotto are made, crumbles, enriching the soil with salts and microelements that are ideal for viticulture. The formation of aromas in our grapes is therefore favoured by the wide temperature range, by the strong winds that dry out the vines, enhancing their aromas and keeping them naturally healthy, and by the nutrients in the soil that give unique mineral notes to our wines. The farm has been owned by the Petrussa family since the half of the 18th Century; at first it was in the hands of family men and then, over the years, it passed to an all-female management, now in its third generation. Since 1995, the vineyard has been managed by Hilde Petrussa, who has taken care of the grassing over of the entire vineyard area and the reorganisation of the vines, favouring the autochthonous varieties, planting new plants using the guyot system and increasing the number of vines per hectare. The quality of the wines is guaranteed by the particularly strict management of the vineyard, which includes thinning out the bunches on the vine and harvesting the grapes by hand at the moment of full and balanced ripeness. Tradition and respect for nature's time, both in viticulture and in winemaking, are the fundamental cornerstones of our company, which still looks to the cycles of the moon to make certain decisions and knows how to wait for the right moment to begin harvesting. Vigna Petrussa vinifies the grapes in the respect of tradition but uses modern and innovative technologies that increase the efficiency of the process while protecting the product, the environment and the territory. We recently received the SQNPI certification (sustainable viticulture), obtained without having to modify our viticulture and vinification process, which demonstrates how our approach was already aligned with the rhythms and needs of nature. This is us: love & passion, patience & meticulous work, strong personality & character, just like the wines we produce.
